Well actually, it wasn't a bucket of KFC, but rather a two piece individual breast and wing meal. I ate my wing first, I hate them because there is nothing to them and quite frankly I just wanted to eat something and it was lunchtime. I wonder what happened to those small Styrofoam cups; the spork scraping the foam was just like the nails on a chalk board sound, oh I remember it well. Styrofoam vs. plastic, I guess plastic is the lesser of two evils in today's world. I dipped my spork into the mashed potatoes, they were really bland so I globed on some spreadable butter, and at least that's what the package said it was, "spreadable butter." Ugh, still bland. I finished the mashed potatoes anyway.
Okay, two items down and I can finally start eating what I like, first up, the chicken breast. Biting in, the original recipe coating takes me back to the memory of being a kid and enjoying a summer day picnic in my favorite park with my family. I loved the park; it overlooked the marina, the bay, the amusement park and the islands in the distance. Those were the days of single digit ages for me, before my parents' divorce and all of their growing drama. Each bite of the chicken breast became a memory marathon.

There I was, simply noticing that I had thousands of choices on how to feed myself that afternoon and I chose comfort. Yes, comfort. I noticed that I was lonely since my husband was away; we tend to eat most of our meals together and on his stomach schedule since he's typically more aware of his hunger than I am. So perhaps what I really wanted was a hug, a blanket or few kind words for myself; instead I chose the comfort of a past memory and I attempted to replicate it with food. I mean let's face it, you can go anywhere in the USA, in fact it doesn't matter if it's the year 1974 or 2010, KFC tastes the same anywhere and at any time. So I wanted to feel good, safe and calm and rather than taking that time and looking at my feelings, I unconsciously got in my car and drove to fast food to sooth myself.
Was I hungry? Honestly, I don't know even know if I was hungry for food or if it was just the acceptable time to eat. I'm aware that sometimes I do things because it's the "right" or "proper" thing to do, rather than do what I really want to do when I want to do it. I'm unconsciously busy trying to be the good girl, rather than make waves or speak up for myself. But that day I was alone, I had no one that I needed to answer to, no one to piss off and no one to seek approval from, it was simply just me and my feelings.
And I noticed that my best life at the moment entailed delayed gratification, I ate the wing first, thus clipping my ability to fly metaphorically right from the start. And I waited for the cole slaw dessert; I saved it for last, or was it that I saved myself for last. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the cole slaw, it still wasn't worth saving. Does some part of me believe that I'm not worth saving? Do I unconsciously put myself last?
I compartmentalized my meal, I ate things in order; not tasting this and having a little of that, but rather noticing that I had to finish what I had started in order to move on to the next item. How much of my life do I "practice being" with this attitude? Can my using my God given gifts and talents to help make the world a better place come before unloading the dishwasher? What would it be like if I put away the laundry with my essence of playfulness, energy and brilliance?
I'm embarrassed to admit that I have a table that seats six, another that seats four and a third cozy table that holds two people. And rather than sitting at any of those tables, I chose to sit on the sofa and eat on my family room ottoman. I'm noticing that I didn't want to feast on my food, just like some part of me is scared to death of feasting on my life; some part of me would rather stay small, shrouded behind the veil of casualness and ease.
I wonder how often that feeling of boredom comes over me; discovering that it was just that darn boredom again, lurking in front of something that was not what I expected or hoped it would be. Do I drop things like the chicken breast, because I'm done with it or that it doesn't fill me the way I thought it would? How many times have I sat with boredom or dropped people or projects and then watched my feelings morph into sadness or anger or worse yet, even emptiness?
So I ask myself again, is the best I can get out of life a KFC individual breast and wing meal? I don't think so, and yet I settled for it. I settled for it when I was a kid, and I settled for it again as an adult. I know life was not very comfortable as a child, so I turned to food to make it look better and even taste better. I'm finding that eating greasy, salty or sugary food has been a portal for me to slip through for years; past the border guards of parental rules, social norms and everyday pressures of life. And most recently, with an unsuspecting box of KFC, I found what I really wanted most in that moment was comfort and to be living a life that was larger than the one that I was presently living. People typically think that eating a diet high in carbohydrates is better than a diet high in fats. This may not be the case always. Many articles and reports speak of the benefits that carbohydrates provide in our diets and encourage us to eat more. Even in college I can remember the professors promoting the use eating of more carbohydrates because they are the main energy source of the body and that if you are an athlete or into exercise that the body needs a lot of carbs to meet the activity demand.
However, this is not necessarily the case for the majority of the population. Its probably a good thing for athletes or others whose lifestyle is demanding physically to consume a good deal of carbs. But for the rest of us who are generally stuck at a desk for the majority of the day, or, even worse, stuck in front of the television...eating a diet high in carbohydrates, sugars and starches may be the worst thing that we could be doing to ourselves.
Before I get into the meat and potatoes of this article, I should make a distinction between the 2 main types of carbohydrates that are usually consumed. These two are called simple and complex. The simple carbs are the ones that most people like and that most probably eat too many of. Simple carbohydrates are contained in sodas, refined sugar products, doughnuts, candy, and most processed foods. And, to top it off, some of the foods that have high degrees of simple sugars in them are not necessarily sweet. Take for instance powdered pancakes without the syrup. These have a higher percentage of simple sugars that are due to the refining and packaging process.
Then there are the complex carbs or sugars. Basically when a sugar is complex, this means that its in it's natural state. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and such are all filled with complexed carbohydrates or sugars. It is the refining process that breaks these naturally occurring sugars down into more simpler molecules and there by makes them less healthful.
Most people don't know that if the diet is high in carbohydrates, then there is a greater chance that that person will have a little more fat than someone whose diet actually has more protein and fat in it. And, if the diet is filled with simple sugars and carbs, like those found in breads, cereals, and pastas, then you may be well on your way to obesity and all the fun health complications that result from being overweight.
The reason for this is being explored and reported on more and more. It seems that when your diet is high in sugars and carbs, your body produces more insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps your body use sugar for energy. However, if your diet has a lot of sugar in it, your body will have a lot of insulin in it. If there is a lot of insulin floating around the body this may contribute to our being fat.
Insulin, is the regulator of the levels of sugar in the blood. If its pumped out into the body in excessive amounts the body gets resistant to it and so is not able to use up all the extra carbs that are floating around. If this happens, the body then converts all that extra carbohydrate into fat and puts it into storage. This is one way that people actually become fat and one of the contributing factors to people developing diabetes.
Eating fatty foods does not make you fat per se. The body's response to all the excess carbohydrates and sugars in the diet makes you fat. The reason for this is that your body only has a limited capacity to store excess sugars in the form of carbohydrates. But, the body has a higher capacity to store fat. It just converts all those candy bars, mochas, sodas,and candies into a substance that it can store more easily, namely, fat.
Many people have tried to address this issue by dieting. But, it's hard to lose weight by simply cutting the amount of calories you eat. Just because you eat less doesn't automatically translate into losing body fat. Your body is pretty smart. When you stop eating, your body actually slows down its metabolism in an effort to conserve fuel. If you starve yourself, you may lose some weight, but it be long before you hit a plateau and stop losing weight. Plus, in many cases, the weight that is lost is muscle mass which actually decreases your ability to burn fat calories!!
The best (not the only) ways to lose weight are based on scientific principles and not gimmicks. They are not based on starvation or buying overly priced special foods. A healthy diet along with a moderate exercise or activity program over time will produce positive results. It can be no other way.

You can find many of them by doing a simple Google search. One that comes to mind is "the Primal Diet". Another is called "Eat, Stop, Eat" and another is called "Fat Loss 4 Idiots". Each of these approaches shows you how eating the right types of foods in the right combinations will help you avoid overloading your body with carbs and potentially developing insulin resistance and excess fat storage.

Eating during the holidays
Now, I know you probably expect a blog which will tell what say most other health websites or trainers/experts. You know, those who say, you avoid all this time of year... not go Board, etc.. Those who frighten you to think that this one meal per year make 100 kg win a day. You could read this and think "uh, you are not a personal trainer." Should say not you me not to? "Feel not all trainers so?"
No, not I.
It drives me nuts when you read or hear, the "experts" that you believe that you can never enjoy life and have things from time to time and even a fit and healthy body care (external and internal) while there are things that I never again occupied (beef or pork for example), I should just like to enjoy everything else from time to time. It's all in moderation. By moderation, I mean every SO often, not, if you have the urge to get. While I not in a long blog about just calories burned like a hawk this holiday season go (all my customers know my philosophy is this: enjoy and eat what you want, during special occasions such as birthdays or holidays and back clean up the diet after it is over.) (Just try to keep your calories by the beat 5-stellig) I would like to give my top 5 list of characters, that you went to a little far to the table.
My top 5
1. If you just wake up with your face on your plate because you fainted can you 10 kg of food in your body in less than 15 min, went too far.
(2) If the need have to hand this year, Guinness world records to document you at the table, you can ready, too far go your family.
3. If you go on the day after Christmas and buy a second scale, so you may went for every foot, too.
4. If a table to install, which is greater than you, that on the students at Hogwarts eat want to, you have the ability , go too far.
(5) And number 5...IF you get a personal letter from your local gym offers to train you, because they too feel so bad you WENT for you, free of charge.

"Eat This Not That Supermarket Survival Guide" is David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding's answer to shopping with their series of books on what they like to call "The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution." What they did for eating out with their first book, the Restaurant Survival Guide, they now do for the supermarket. It is a very handy little book to assist you as your walk the aisles filling your shopping cart.
After a short introduction regarding food and what the book can do for you, Chapter one covers basic rules for your trip to the supermarket. Rules like working the edges and learning the lingo. This chapter includes 11 secrets the food industry doesn't want you to know and the 20 worst packaged foods in America. The worst happens to be Marie Callender's Creamy Parmesan Chicken Pot Pie.
Chapter two focuses on the produce aisle and how to supercharge your meals. Good little primer on fruits and vegetables. From there, we go to the meat and fish counters in chapter three. This is a short chapter to help you make sense of meat. Chapter four then covers the refrigerator. This is the first chapter that starts to divide foods into "eat this and not that" categories. For example, on the Deli Meats page, you find Hormel Natural Choice Carved Chicken Breast on the "eat this" page, and Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Grilled Chicken Breast Strips on the "not that" page. (Calories, fat, and sodium are all listed, and lower on the first choice) Some of the other categories in this chapter include hot dogs and sausage, cheese, and yogurt.
Chapter five is the chapter to review when it is time to stock your pantry staples. Categories include: grains, rice sides, dry noodles, bread loaves, breakfast breads and pastries, cereals, condiments, nut and seed butters, jellies, jams, preserves, pasta sauces and much more.
Sure, snacks and sweets are not top choices for anyone on a diet, but if you are going to eat them, chapter six will help you make smarter choices. Some good advice on snacks here, and then categories contrasting corn chips, potato chips, dips, pretzels, snack mixes, crackers, popcorn, cookies, and much more.
In the seventh chapter we get to the freezer section. Contrasted foods include ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, frozen pies, frozen pizza, meat substitutes, and other foods found in the frozen aisles.
Chapter eight covers drinks. Juice, smoothies, shakes, tea, milk, beer, and a few others are covered here. I know an entire book just came out on what to drink, so this chapter is just a teaser compared to what the book contains. This is still a good primer on what you are buying to drink.
The final chapter, nine, provides you with a guide to save money while shopping. It contains a couple of tips and then ten popular dishes that you can make at home to save money and calories. The book then concludes with a food additive glossary.
I really like this series of books. They are small, so you can carry with you, colorful so easy to read and use, and packed with information. Sure, not every single food you might find is covered, but enough are listed to make you a savvy shopper. By understanding the differences between the eat this foods and the not that foods, you will then be able to read labels and make healthier choices even when not found in this guide. Reading this book also provides a lot of good information about eating healthy, and after reading it you'll be much better prepared to hit the supermarket and fill your cart with healthy selections.

"Eat This Not That" by David Zinczenko with Matt Gooulding is described on the cover as a "Restaurant Survival Guide" and "The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution." The restaurant survival guide is pretty accurate if surviving a restaurant is choosing lower calorie foods over those with sometimes more calories for a meal than you should be eating all day. The no-diet weight loss solution is based on just eating the healthier choices provided which will automatically cut calories and thus, lead to weight loss if all other factors remain the same.
Obviously, losing fat has a number of variables. Your exercise is a huge one, and what you consume is another. This book will help you make smarter choices when dining at your favorite restaurant so that you consume less calories. It does not have all the choices you will face when staring at a menu, but has some of the best and worst for you to compare.
The book starts with a brief introduction regarding restaurant choices and how Americans have gotten fatter over the years. It then tells you how this book can help. I agree, the book can help. The book then shares a couple of "top swaps" before explaining the new rules of eating out. This section provides some good tips to help you stay on your diet and eat healthier. This section also shares some secrets the restaurants don't want you to know, such as how many calories supersizing adds, what's in a Chicken McNugget, or what's in a Wendy's Frosty.
Next comes a chapter on the best and worst restaurant foods in America. Things such as the Best Kid's Fast Food which they list as McDonald's 4-Piece McNuggets with Apple Dippers, Caramel Dip, and 1% milk. (Personally, we've gotten this for our daughter, but don't give her the Caramel Dip - why ruin a perfectly good apple?) The best fast food burger is listed as Wendy's 1/4 Pound Single and best sit-down burger is Red Robin's Natural Burger. Number one on the worst list was Outback's Baby Back Ribs full rack with a whopping 3,021 calories.
The next section of the book is an alphabetical list of restaurants with some of the best and worst foods. Thus the "Eat This and Not That." There are full color pictures throughout that tended to make me hungry when I looked at the book before eating. I mean, come on, some of those bad foods look so good. However, so did many of the better choices. There are also little tidbits and interesting facts throughout the book. It's easy to read, and pretty interesting. (That is if you are interested in what you are eating and what it contains, especially calories.)
Each restaurant has one main dish to eat vs. a bad one, and then a few other picks and other passes. Take Olive Garden for instance. The Eat this choice is the Venetian Apricot Chicken and the choice to pass is Garlic-Herb Chicken Con Broccoli. Other picks include the Lasagna Classico, Grilled Chicken Spiedini, and Herb-Grilled Salmon. Other passes were Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Scampi, and Grilled Shrimp Caprese.
Next comes the menu decoder. This is a great section that explains a lot about what you see on the menu and will make you much more aware of the choices you are making. And finally there was a little bit about eating at airports, vending machines, amusement parks and such places.
Obviously, if you eat at the same restaurant frequently, you will run out of good choices listed in the book. However, with the information here, you will be so much better prepared to select the foods that fit with your dietary goals. I really like the book and think it's a handy guide regarding restaurant food.
